PERALTA is ideally placed for visiting the major cities of Northern
Italy. It is also situated in the foothills of the Alpuan Alps. With
so much art and history to see in Italy the wild isolated places are
often ignored. The Alpuan Alps is such an area, with spectacular rugged
mountains that rise to over 6,000 feet and only a few roads it is the
hill walkers paradise. Staying in Peralta you can get the best of both
worlds you van visit Florence, Pisa, Volterra, Sienna, and Lucca intermingled
with days of some of the finest hill walking in Europe.
LOCAL WALKS.
From Peralta are many easy walks through the chestnut forests and olive
groves to such places as Toricigliano
and Gombetelli both of which have an excellent restaurant serving
real Tuscan cuisine. A more energetic walk will take you to the top
of Mount
Parana from where you can experience a panorama
of the Alpuan Alps. Short car rides make the whole of the Alpuan
Alps available and for the devoted mountain walker the area has numerous
mountain refuges where it is possible to stay overnight.
TOWNS IN THE LOCAL AREA:
There are several towns well worth visiting in the area.
CAMAIORE is the local
town about 3km from Peralta and is a lovely unpretensious tuscan market
town.
PIETRA SANTA is a litte further west and is town whose long history
is centred on art and sculptur. With many large bronze casting foundaries
used by sculptors from all over the world.
CARRARA is a little further west again and is famous for its marble
quarries which you can visit.
VIAREGGIO is only
10km way and is the areas seaside resort.
Near Viarregio is Torre De Lago which has an annual Puccini
Festival in July and August
