DIRECTIONS FOR PERALTA FROM PISA AIPORT & AUTOSTRADA A12
GPS : Agliano Peralla Position: E10.34243* longitude, N43.93166* latitude
We recommend not using a GPS as it has been known to direct people over hills and via small roads. Use it from Camaiore onwards if necessary, but the following directions are very reliable.
From the Autostrada A12 (Livorno/Genoa), take the exit VIAREGGIO & CAMAIORE. (If you are arriving from Lucca direction, please ask for directions.) We recommend not using a GPS as it has been known to direct people over hills and not use the best route.
From Pisa Airport the drive will take you about 45 minutes. When you leave the car hire place, follow green signs for AUTOSTRADA, then direction of GENOVA. Leave Autostrada at exit for VIAREGGIO/CAMAIORE. Head for CAMAIORE. Tree lined road – over 2 sets of traffic lights and then a round-about where PIEVE is signalled on first road to right off roundabout.
You are now bypassing CAMAIORE and you can see the town on your left.
Once past the town, you find yourself on a tree-lined road and you quickly come to a very small turning on the left with a very small sign marked PIEVE. First, look out for a blue sign to Marignana on your right – the sign to Pieve is immediately afterwards on the left. Take this turning and bear left.
Follow this road and you come to a cemetery (on your left). The road goes past the cemetery and then uphill to the right, and swings round to the left. There is a church above you on the right. (It is possible to buy some groceries at this point. If you wish to do this, continue straight past the right hand turn for Peralta, and 20 metres down the road is a grocery/fruit/veg shop on your right). Otherwise follow the Peralta sign to the right up past the church – you find yourself in a large area with the church on the righthand side). In front of you is an arch and a shrine to the Madonna in the wall. Turn left here (sign says Buchignano). Wind your way up the hill, giving a hoot on the corners to warn people you are coming (road is narrow). You then get to a Y fork in the road with a signpost that marks VIA di AGLIANO PERALLA to the left. Take this left fork, continue winding your way through the lovely woods and the road swings around to the right and then there is a straight stretch in front of you which takes you to Agliano.
The last bit of road through the hamlet of Agliano is very steep and narrow and twists round a couple of hairpin bends – don’t take any right turns, keep going up and round to left. Don’t despair! The best way to tackle this last bit of road is to stay in first gear, take all the corners as wide as possible, and do not stop. Give a good hoot with the horn to let people know you are coming, and just slowly but surely wind your way up. If you find your car lacks power, turn off the air conditioning. We recommend hiring a smallish car, although the largest car can certainly make its way up without a problem! Also recommend taking the extra daily insurance – a good precaution in Italy! You arrive in our carpark, leave your car, walk along the path to PERALTA where we will welcome you. If you have a lot of luggage, we can bring it from carpark in our little 3 wheel truck (9.30 to 18.00 except by prior arrangement).
Very large cars will not be able to make the narrow road through Agliano. There is a carpark up to your right just before the actual road repairs. There is a sign ‘Parking for large cars’. Please telephone and let us know you have arrived and we will come down to meet you with our little 3 wheel truck.
If you have a problem on the way, please call Kate +39 349 359 7900.
